This week in class has been very stressful especially trying to get everything updated and ready to go before I graduate. This is been a really fun class to express my artistic abilities and relax. But having to get everything done in a certain amount of time on top of all my other school work is very time consuming. My website doesn't work all the time so then that results in me having to post everything on my phone. When I do this somethings don't go or show up that need to be seen so my work and be graded. Otherwise ceramics class has been a pleasure.
For me this week I've really been focusing on detailed work and glazing. I wanted to find all the different ways and techniques there is in glazing my pieces. I believe that if you take the time to make a cup or a bowl or plate then you can take the time to create a unique design for that specific project.I have been testing colors that work together and some that don't but that was all the process of finding out what I liked what I didn't. My personal favorite is a turquoise with the purple. I really been focused on finishing up all of my projects. These past few weeks have been really crazy. I have missed three days and so I'm very behind with all my projects. Last week on Friday I wasn't there and so all my projects dried out over the week. So it was basically like starting all over again. My main focus this week has been to create two plates and a bowl. Hopefully everything will get done in time. But right now I'm just going with the flow. My theme for my ceramics projects was simple. No theme! In life you have the option to choose what you want to become but you can't predict what will happen in the future. Whenever I made a project I had an idea of what I wanted to make. Sometimes it turned out how I planned and then others it was nothing like I imagined it to be. For me I believe you learn from your mistakes and grow from your experiences. I will always remember the time I wanted to make a cup but I made the base too thin and it fell through. So I ended up making one of my favorite projects. I created "chip" from beauty and the beast. I have learned so much this semester from throwing big bowls to making plates and lids. I have also been introduced into new glazing techniques. Raku is by far my favorite but I have used various methods such as splatter, drip, dip, and sponging. Over this past semester I have made many projects, some for myself but mostly for others. It is the best feeling knowing that my hard work can be appreciated with a simple thank you or smile. To me that is what art is about is being able to express yourself in a way that others are able to understand, any maybe have a different perspective on it. Art is whatever you make it to be and it cannot be labeled with a theme. Contrasting color has been my focus for this week. I love the ways that they work together yet they are so different. I have worked on a few projects with color and I absolutely love them. On the wheel I have been struggling with pulling the walls of the clay up evenly, so my projects tend to be thinner on one side than the other. My goal by the end of this year is to have a really big bowl that is even. I have only been on the wheel twice this week because I have spent most of my time glazing. Hopefully I will be able to take the corrections given and apply that to my future projects.
I have really been focused on symmetric design this week. I have made a few projects with circles, lines, drop lines, patterns ext. I wanted to try and push myself to try something new and that I have never done before. The challenges that I have faced with this is when trying to do this I get frustrated with certain aspects. For instance with glazing the designs onto my projects, sometimes the glaze runs or I do not get the look I was going for. There two factors that play into a complete looking project for me. I believe that if you want something to look nice you have to put the time and effort into it. As well as it has to be complete, there needs to be the look of no mistakes or else I will just focus on those every time I look at that project. If I have those two things done then I will be proud in the work that I made.
This week has been a lot of review for me. The last time I threw on the wheel was last year, so I was a little bit rusty. After I got the introduction into being an advanced student, we were given team names and assigned our jobs for that week. We had to fill out a worksheet that made us look in the art book and describe things like lines, shapes, movement and things like that. Sometimes I help with the special needs kids and I instruct them what things need to be done. It is really helpful for the teacher who has to spread her time between three kids. So I like to help to whenever I can. That's about all for now, till next time!
